EM Ceramics - A Water Butt Treatment to Stop Rainwater Turning Stagnant.
Water Butt Treatments
on the market usually come in liquid form and are required to be added to the
water in the water butt every two weeks. However, there effectiveness can diminish over time due to the fact that the
active ingredient will rise and fall with the amount of rainwater contained in the water butt, and because of the busy lives we lead, we will often forget to top up with the water butt treatment too.
If you are like me, keeping rainwater fresh is a constant problem and remembering to add the liquid water butt treatment is always a pain. I am sure many of you keen gardeners, like me have numerous water butts, or maybe just the one to collect rainwater for use on the garden during dry periods.
I have been using EM Ceramics from 'The Fertile Earth Consultancy' and these have made my life a lot easier. EM ceramics are a natural, non-toxic Water Butt Treatment that provides continuous prevention against the water from turning stagnant. A bag of the specially produced ceramic pieces are simply placed at the bottom of the water butt, and because it provides continuous protection for ever, you do not need to worry about the need to add traditional liquid water butt treatments, it certainly has made my life easier.
Rainwater is a much better form of water for plants than tap water, due to the fact it doesn’t contains chlorine and other chemicals, but it does have a habit of turning stagnant and horrible smelling when stored for a long time, especially during hot weather.

So, What Causes Water Butts To Turn Stagnant?
The
stagnant smell is caused by anaerobic bacteria feeding on
decaying leaves and other organic matter washed down the drain pipe and as they feed they give off hydrogen
sulphide or methane gases that give the characteristic bad smell. This stagnant water is not then really ideal for use on the garden,
because it can be a breeding ground for water borne diseases, such as
phytophthora, which is a real problem these days, especially for
conifers.

Keeping Water Butt Water Fresh
Water Butt Water must be kept covered-up, otherwise the water will turn green with algae in sunlight and become an ideal breeding ground for mosquitos. Water butt water can also harbour water borne diseases that could be serious to human health. So, practicing good hygiene will help to prevent water from turning stagnant. Use the water quickly, remove any organic matter and keep out of direct sunlight.
